Weaving Technique
Odisha Ikat is a kind of Ikat, a resist dyeing technique, originating from Indian state of Odisha. Also known as 'Bandha of Odisha'. Bandha can be defined as "A length of systematically arranged yarn, dyed according to a preconceived design in such a manner so as to enable a weaver to portray the design when the yarn is converted to a fabric through the process of weaving". A notable feature in this Ikat is that it depicts the same colourful design motif on both its front and back. No additional yarn is required to produce this effect.
Art Origin
The Origin of Khandua Silk Sarees: A Legacy of Artistry and Tradition Khandua Silk Sarees originate from Nuapatna village in the Cuttack district of Odisha, a place deeply intertwined with the ancient traditions of India. The history of Khandua can be traced back to the 12th Century AD, and it holds a special place in the rituals of the revered Jagannath Temple at Puri, Odisha. This weave, embodying centuries of devotion and craftsmanship, is the hallmark of the largest handloom cluster in Odisha, where over 10,000 weavers work across 6,000 looms. At the heart of Khandua is the mastery of single ikat, a weaving technique where either the warp or the weft is tied and dyed before the weaving process begins. This intricate method produces mesmerizing curvilinear ikat patterns, celebrated for their precision and beauty. Inspired by nature and ancient culture, these weaves carry forward the essence of Odisha’s spiritual and artistic heritage. Every motif that adorns a Khandua Saree tells a story. From the breathtaking architecture of temples to the time-worn sculptures and caves of the region, the artistry of Khandua draws inspiration from Odisha’s rich cultural landscape. One iconic design element is the Butti motif, derived from the Persian word "buta," meaning "flower" or "bud." These elegant floral motifs, whether in small or grand forms, have adorned sarees for centuries and are considered timeless, classic symbols of beauty. The weavers of Nuapatna transform threads into vibrant expressions of tradition, culture, and nature. Through their craft, they connect the world to the soul of Odisha, one exquisite handwoven masterpiece at a time.
