Weaving Technique
Odisha Ikat is a kind of Ikat, a resist dyeing technique, originating from Indian state of Odisha. Also known as 'Bandha of Odisha'. Bandha can be defined as "A length of systematically arranged yarn, dyed according to a preconceived design in such a manner so as to enable a weaver to portray the design when the yarn is converted to a fabric through the process of weaving". A notable feature in this Ikat is that it depicts the same colourful design motif on both its front and back. No additional yarn is required to produce this effect.
Art Origin
The Origin of Berhampuri Patta Silk Sarees: Reflecting the timeless legacy of Odisha’s weaving heritage The Berhampuri Patta Silk Saree carries with it more than two centuries of tradition, artistry, and devotion. Originating from the silk city of Berhampur, Odisha, this weave is renowned for its temple-inspired Phoda Kumbha borders and its signature double anchal (pallu)—longer and more elaborate than most, adorned with motifs of birds, barfi, and geometric designs. Once offered to the deities of the Jagannath Temple in Puri, these sarees hold a sacred place in Odisha’s cultural heritage. Handwoven by master artisans, each saree reflects weeks of meticulous craftsmanship, making it not just an attire but a living piece of history—an heirloom that embodies exclusivity, devotion, and timeless elegance. Originating from Berhampur, a historic silk city of Odisha, this craft is deeply rooted in temple traditions and cultural rituals, earning it the name “Phoda Kumbha” for its unique temple-shaped border design. This art form thrives entirely on handloom weaving, with generations of weavers preserving the intricate techniques passed down from their ancestors.
